“I Speak Through Silence,
My Sculptures Speak Louder.”

Biography

Majid Sheikh Akbari

Born in Tehran, Iran, and based in Vancouver, Canada since 2012, Majid’s artistic practice is shaped by mystical poetry and spiritual inquiry, exploring themes of interconnectedness, perception, and the nature of existence. Originally trained as a civil engineer, he found the discipline did not fulfill his deeper philosophical and spiritual pursuits. Majid transitioned to art to pursue a more direct expression of these interests and has since focused exclusively on his sculptural practice. He has dedicated his work to creating expressive, tactile forms that engage both space and viewer.

His work draws on a fascination with the underlying unity of existence, reflecting spiritual beliefs through material exploration. Working across concrete, stainless steel, wood, and reclaimed elements, Majid creates sculptures that respond to both indoor and outdoor environments, ranging from intimate pieces to large-scale public works.

A commitment to environmental awareness is central to his practice, guiding his choice of materials and processes. His sculptures challenge the notion that beauty must come at the expense of the environment, inviting contemplation beyond the rhythms of daily life. Prior to relocating to Canada, one of his residential building designs in Tehran was nominated for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

Artist statement

Majid Sheikh Akbari

As a sculptor, I am deeply drawn to the profound essence of the spiritual realm, the power of love, the intricacies of human existence, and the urgent need for sustainability in our world. It is through the medium of metal, wood, stainless steel, glass, and various other materials that I strive to create sculptures that encapsulate these timeless themes and engage viewers on a profound level. Embracing sustainability as an ethical imperative, I am committed to create artworks that harmonize with the environment. Conscious material sourcing and responsible production methods are integral to my creative process. I repurpose and up-cycle materials whenever possible, infusing new life into discarded objects. By creating sustainable sculptures, I hope to inspire others to reflect on the environmental impact of their own choices and actions. I believe that art has the power to transform spaces, infusing them with a sense of beauty, contemplation, and inspiration whether displayed in a gallery, adorning a private residence, or gracing a public square. My sculptures serve as catalysts for dialogue. By engaging with my sculptures, viewers are invited to embark on a journey of self: discovering, exploring the depth of their own spirituality, fostering a connection with the world around them, and igniting a passion for sustainable living. Together we can create a more compassionate, harmonious, and sustainable future.
